i heart china
i love the olympics. it is practically the only opportunity the world has to come together at one time and one place. there is an undeniable sense of international camaraderie and national pride.
but the 2008 beijing olympics are a little more special. it has been well noted that this is china's welcome to the world. as a country that has been closed off from the international community for so long, china's opportunity to host the olympics is nothing short of revolutionary...and revolution is a very familiar concept for the chinese. unfortunately, most revolutions have resulted in disastrous outcomes. only recently have quasi-revolutions achieved success. the olympic revolution is guaranteed to open chinese minds, hearts, and spirits. for a nation that has long viewed itself as the center of the universe, having no real need for international relations, china's desire to open their doors to the world should be praised.
i have been disappointed these past few months to hear of the riots and protests surrounding the beijing olympics and the torch relay. i assume the people engaging in these protests are simply unaware of chinese history and therefore ignorant of the beijing olympics' significance. when one only looks at the current problems in china and disregards its recent turbulent history and tremendous progress made during the post-mao era, one makes an unfair and inaccurate assessment of this country.
we are all guilty of judging people, countries, and ideas without acquiring the information and history necessary to make an educated assessment. i hope the beijing olympics provides people an opportunity to reevaluate their previously held opinions regarding china.
